What Is A Wake Boat?

First, let’s define the term. Wake boats, also called ski, surf, or wakeboard boats, are very sturdy V-drive motor boats that have enough power to tow water sports enthusiasts at high speeds. These boats are also designed to specifically create surfable wakes behind them to maximize the thrill. Most wake boats include a cruise control setting to keep the speed constant, which makes them better for towing people in a consistent and safe way. 

 

Common Features

Aside from cruise control, wake boats are built with a few different features to better create and control their wake. That includes ballast, various hull technologies, and hydrofoil.

Ballast just means any weight that pushes the stern down into the water to increase the wake. Sometimes that means sacks of water or sand, but sometimes boats are designed so that passengers sit at the rear, acting as ballast. 

The hull technologies help change the size and shape of the wake further. Careful shaping of the hull, the rudder propeller, and the fins can contribute to the process, but these features tend to make wake boats bad at handling shallow water. 

The term “hydrofoil” refers to metal wedges or plates that the operator can shift and adjust at will to manually control the size and shape of the wake even more by displacing water.
