Pontoons are a popular family boat thanks to their abundance of space and ability to support a wide variety of water activities. Because they’re such versatile models, these boats often come with an enormous stock of included features and amenities, which can often overwhelm new boaters as they try to choose the perfect pontoon for their needs. Thankfully, we here at LMC Marine Center have written up a few helpful tips to make sure you find the perfect pontoon for you.

Your Budget

Pontoons are an extremely popular boat, thanks to their abundance of space and reasonable price. However, while these boats are often more affordable than other models of the same size, that doesn’t mean they’re cheap by any means. A pontoon's large size and many helpful amenities means that it is quite a pricey purchase and you’ll need to be sure to have a budget set before you decide to visit your nearest dealership. Without one, you may find yourself falling into a dangerous amount of debt, or walking away with a bad case of buyer’s remorse.

The Number of Pontoons

While the boat itself is often called a pontoon, this name also refers to the boat’s unique flotation device that keeps it buoyant in the water. These large tubes filled with air—also called pontoons— will be found on the underside of the deck, and affect much more than just the model’s buoyancy. The more pontoons your boat has, the faster, more oversized, and more stable it will be. However, if you plan on traveling in calmer waters, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers, a boat with only two pontoons should fit your needs just fine.
