It’s very important that you find the right parts for your boat. Incompatible or low-quality parts can cause all kinds of problems, up to and including compatibility issues and mechanical failures. That’s why the experts at LMC Marine Center have created this guide to buying boat parts.

Fluids

Every time you turn on your boat’s engine, it loses some coolant, oil, and transmission fluid. These fluids are crucial to engine performance, so you’ll want to top them off regularly. You should also check the condition of the fluids themselves. For example, oil that feels “gritty” to the touch is full of metal shavings, which indicates that some of your boat’s internal components are grinding together and damaging each other. When it comes to picking out fluids, be sure to check your owner’s manual for a list of recommended products.

Light Bulbs

Burnt-out bulbs are one of the more common boat maintenance issues. Luckily, they’re also one of the easiest to fix. We recommend keeping a few spare bulbs on hand to replace any that stop working. If you’re not sure what kind of bulb to buy for your boat, check your owner’s manual.

Filters

A fuel filter helps ensure that only clean fuel enters your engine. We recommend that you replace your fuel filter once for every hundred hours that you use your boat. Just to be safe, you should also inspect the filter at the beginning of each season, regardless of when you last switched out the filter. As with light bulbs, it’s best to keep a few spare around so that you don’t wind up scrambling to find a compatible part before your big trip.

Spark Plugs & Fuses

Spark plugs and fuses are cheap and fairly easy to replace, so there’s no reason not to keep a few around just in case. If you’re not sure what kind of fuse or spark plug you’ll need, check your owner’s manual.
